Kolasa’s Restaurant (The Polish Peasant)
About This Spot
Stepping into Kolasa’s Restaurant, affectionately known as The Polish Peasant, is like entering a warm embrace from a cherished neighbor. Nestled in Michigan City, this unpretentious spot carries the quiet charm of a home kitchen where traditions are lovingly preserved and shared. The pace here slows down, inviting you to settle into the cozy atmosphere marked by soft lighting and a genuine sense of welcome.
The heart of the experience revolves around authentic, handcrafted Polish fare that speaks quietly of heritage and care. From the moment you’re offered the house bread with its rich butter and bacon jam accompaniment, you know you’re in for something thoughtfully made. Throughout your visit, familiar, soulful flavors unfold—whether in the satisfying crisp of potato cakes or the gentle richness of a pierogi platter served just right.
There’s an unspoken connection between the kitchen and the table here, a testament to the owners’ daily hands-on approach and the community they’ve nurtured. Dishes arrive like stories told softly over shared moments, where each bite invites you to linger. The atmosphere is relaxed yet vibrant, where the owner’s warmth feels less like hospitality and more like catching up with an old friend.
Kolasa’s embodies a slower, richer way to enjoy a meal downtown, where every element—from the carefully prepared soups to the surprise desserts—adds a layer of comfort to your time here. It’s a place that quietly encourages discovery, not just of Polish cuisine but of the simple joys in good company and honest cooking.

We are from New Hampshire, We love to travel and try local establishments over chain restaurants. There are always American, Chinese, Italian, Thai to be found along with Pubs & Grilles. When I came across The Polish Peasant, indicating authentic Polish cuisine hand made daily by the owners I knew I had to make reservations. The food was absolutely amazing. The portions more than one can eat in a single seating. The prices, more than reasonably priced. The evening we went Amanda (one of the Owners) was our hostess as well as server, the evening was a Wednesday and the tables full with diners. Amanda handled the room like no other server I have ever met or seen before. Amanda was kind, not one person had to wait for anything they ordered. The entire room dining requests met with so much ease and grace. A week later we returned for coffee and dessert, we arrived about 15 minutes before closing, Amanda wasn’t there that night but her other Hostess greeted us with open arms and made no mention that they would be closed in 15 minutes. We made a point of inquiring and making it know that we wanted coffee and dessert. We seated without issue and were told to take our time with dessert and coffee. The relaxed atmosphere was wonderful. We only wish we lived closer as we know this would be “our place” that we would go to regularly with family and friends.

Pretty good food, reasonably filling as well. No wait times when I went, around 7 pm. Recommend the Taste of Poland platter.

Wow wow wow! The photos do not do this place justice! The taste of Poland was fantastic as we got to try a few different things! We also got the potato cakes which were amazingly crispy. Wow. Wish we could have tried even more stuff!

Highly highly recommend this place. I wanted to keep ordering and eating stuff - stopped only because I knew I would suffer on my drive to Indianapolis the next day. The staff was so friendly, and the place so beautiful. I had 6 pierogies, and they graciously let me mix them up - 2 each of the potato and meat types, and 1 each of the mushroom and kraut types. They started with the house bread with butter. I also had the Polish meatballs, and everything was absolutely delicious. Very very high quality food. There were a couple of large groups there too and everyone seemed to be having a good time. And only 20ish bucks for such great food. Only went beyond 30 because I wanted to leave a huge tip.

Not sure how I didn’t know about this place. I’ve been trying to find good, authentic polish food in the region for awhile now. Well this place scratched that itch! I got the hunters stew, variety of pierogis, corn chowder soup, and fresh baked bread. Everything was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced! I can’t wait to go back and try the rest of their menu!

Fantastic dinner tonight! They had a waitlist but still happily seated us at 7:40 with smiles and attentive service. The food was absolutely delicious from start to finish. If we lived in the area, we would be regulars!
